One of the hurdles that the majority of high school students face is how to score a 5 on their AP exams (READ: Ask a Nerd! Taking the AP Exam). Some students will use these accolades as a way to gain acceptance to college while other students will use them as a way to attempt to graduate university in four years and avoid being a 5th year senior. The cost of education in the United States continues to rise, and students who score a 3 on any of their AP exams will be able to use them for college credit. Students can, potentially, have an entire semester or more of classes under their belt prior to even starting their college career. Although the majority of students who have the opportunity to take AP classes will benefit from such an experience, some students will not have the opportunity to take classes in certain subject areas. Some students have talents that lie outside of history and math â€" the most popular AP courses offered â€" and others will live in rural or remote areas where AP classes may be severely limited if offered at all. Students who do not have an opportunity to take AP classes at school deserve a chance to be able to score at least a 3. There should be no misunderstanding that this is a substantial commitment and such students will need to conduct a substantial amount of guided self-study with the help or an Orange County AP test tutor. Getting Started 1. Students should purchase the test prep book before even considering signing up for the exam. The testing room may be a place of high surveillance, with teachers pacing up and down the rows of the studious scribblers; there may even be cameras scrutinizing every movement the pupils make - as long as exams retain their importance, many students will be willing to take a risk to get a better mark. With their very future at stake - the difference of a percentage point potentially determining their admission to a university, who can really blame them?When I was at school the most sophisticated way of evading detection was by constructing something called `cheat notes.` These were simply a tiny scraps of paper, sometimes no larger than a stamp, onto which would be written information which our brains somehow could not retain. This might be certain dates for a history exam, or mathematical formulae for a physics test. The contraband data had to be concise of course, nothing more than a few lines could be imprinted onto these tiny scraps, which would be surreptitiously unfolded out on the battlefield of the exam hall. After opening these origami-like objects, the pupil might be dismayed to find they couldn`t read their own tiny script; or would discover that the ink had blotted, rendering the aids useless. If they believed their cover had been blown, and that a teacher was about to intercept them, the cheat notes would be swiftly devoured, with the information they couldn`t keep in their mind now assimilated through their digestive system.These days there are far more ingenious was to cheat in exams - the most obvious tool for this malfeasance being the mobile phone. The internet exceeds in scope the library of Alexandria, and with just about every school child possessing a smart phone, the answer to that problematic exam question may just be a few finger taps away. These will enable anyone to view th e internet with clandestine ease, and also record anything they so much as look at. Perhaps all pupils will need to have their spectacles inspected prior to entering the exam room, to ensure they will not be able to transmit an image of their test to a group of friends, who would be able to dictate the perfect answer through the tiny speakers in the arms of the glasses.A slightly more prosaic method of cheating in an exam was `brought to light` recently, when a university law student was caught, having covered 24 pages with invisible ink, which they were able to read using a UV light source, which they had smuggled into the room. The protocol for law exams permits students to consult certain text books, and the student had filled 24 pages of one book with `unauthorized notes` according to the Office of the Independent Adjudicator. Though there is almost something charming - James Bond crossed with Harry Potter - about this case, it represents a rise in `cheat tech,` with the OIA rev ealing that hundreds of students have been caught with covert devices they hoped would aid them during exams.Lord Story, Liberal Democrats education spokesman for the House of Lords, has said that students are under immense pressure to do well in exams, and that the temptation to get higher grades by cheating can sometimes be too hard to resist.`The number of students is increasing all the time, particularly overseas students. Sometimes rich parents are paying the fees and the young person is desperate to do well in exams and make sure money wasn`t wasted`.Cheating is a pernicious problem: If students are consistently able to evade detection during exams, and obtain grades that do not accurately reflect their academic abilities, then the very credibility of that academic institution will be devalued. How Your Brain Stores New WordsMemories are the result of our brains encoding information  so we can access it later. Psychologists have suggested that this process takes place in three stages: encoding, storage and retrieval. For language learners, understanding these three stages can help you maximize your own vocabulary memorization.Stage one, encoding, can occur through pictures, sound or meaning. In other words, you can remember a new vocabulary word through seeing it, hearing it or learning its definition. Both longterm and short term memory use all three of these routes to encode information.The second stage, storage, involves holding information for a short or extended period of time. Most adults keep only a few items in their short term memory at once, while longterm memory has a much larger, perhaps unlimited, capacity. How to Make it as a Touring Musician Sleepmakeswaves Tells All Maile Proctor If youre an aspiring guitarist, youre going to want to get to know the instrumental post-rock quartet  sleepmakeswaves. Hailing from Sydney, Australia, the band kicks off their United States tour this month, behind the release of their new album  Love of Cartography. We had a chance to catch up with Alex Wilson from sleepmakeswaves (bass, keys, electronics), to  chat about the new album, and living the dream of being a touring musician. TL: First of all, congrats on the new album and the tour, and thank you so much for chatting with us! AW: Thanks for having me. Very excited about our upcoming tour of the United States with The Contortionist, Monuments and Entheos. Only a few days out now. TL: Following the success of your previous album, what were you looking to do differently with Love Of Cartography? AW: We wanted to shake things up for ourselves without vastly changing what we were about. One part of that was the process. We tried to bring our stage show into the studio as much as possible by tracking together in a room. Our producer, Nick DiDia, pushed us in that direction and we would be reluctant to make a record differently now. The other shake-up was the emotional vibe. There was less emphasis on the darker, brooding side of our sound and more push to being euphoric and uplifting. A natural outgrowth of where we were as musicians and people when writing Cartography. TL: You guys are living the dream of many aspiring musicians; what goes into being a touring musician, the dedication involved, practice, sticking with it when you may not feel inspired? AW: It’s not so much a thing one does, it’s more like a way of life. There’s practice, alone and with bandmates. There’s admin ­ ­ ­â€" emails, making sure gear works, money stuff. There’s being away from work, home, loved ones  and finding ways to keep everyday life humming along OK while that happens. Most of all, it’s about a mindset I try to cultivate: balancing the fortune of living the dream with the discipline and dedication to not waste the opportunity. Being grateful for music and travelling the world, and gracious in the face of the tougher stuff: getting fired, getting dumped, being broke, and missing home. TL: Speaking of touring, how do you continue to write new music and practice while on tour? What do you love about being on the road and performing live? AW: I have to write music on the road or I lose my mind. It’s a way to unwind. On tour, I have my laptop, USB interface, headphones, Ableton Live, amp sims, EZ Drummer and no shortage of guitars. That’s enough to keep me cranking out the riffs. Big chunks of Emergent, Great Northern and A Little Spark were written this way. For me, a good night on the road is when sleepmakeswaves takes the stage and is firing on all cylinders. There’s a vibe between us and the crowd. Then we get on the bus and talk and drink until 4 a.m. when me,  and our drummer Tim, start making sandwiches. I’ve made some very deep relationships touring, have seen amazing parts of the world and shared moments with excellent people all around the world. TL: How does being an instrumental rock band shift your focus, the way you play and practice , and how you write your music? AW: I always wrote music sleepmakeswaves-style, I just happened to find the band that would fit the sound in my head when we got together 10 years ago. The instrumental approach fits my muse well because I’m at my best when I’m exploring pure sound and finding new ways to approach the geometries of rhythm and pitch. I have a huge place in my heart for excellent singers and lyrics but I think it’s part of  sleepmakeswaves musical path to focus predominantly on the power of instruments and pure sound. TL: How does music allow you to express yourself? Do you find it harder to create music when you are dealing with personal hardships or is it a great outlet for emotions? The whole point of music, to me, is to convey emotion. Sometimes the relationship is one of pursuit. I feel an emotion (joy, despair or something we don’t have a name for) and try to nail it down in a song. Sometimes it’s discovery, writing just for the love of music and chancing upon a feeling or vibe that is unintentional but running with it. Johnny Marr, one of my favourite musicians, called songwriting daydreaming in sound. Emotionally, I love composition because it’s satisfying to create. Live, the volume, audience, and physical intensity of what we do takes me out of everyday thought patterns in a way little else can. Writer’s block for me has sometimes corresponded with hard times, sometimes with really great stretches in life. Theres a dark and intense side to my personality that I think would be far harder to manage had I not created such a large space for music in my life. TL: Can you talk a little about your creative process? I know you guys have said originality is a priority, how do you use your musical influences and still maintain your own originality? AW: That’s really hard to answer, a great deal of the process is intuitive. I view songs as puzzles that need to balance fresh musical ideas with a kind of emotional narrative that will give them shape and impact. So we tend to cycle through ideas and arrangements until things feel exciting for us while satisfying obsessions we have about balance, melody and atmosphere. For me, originality is good in moderation. I like things to be fresh, but being different just for the sake of it won’t impress me on its own. There’s got to be craft and emotion to give weight to a new idea. Some bands are Radiohead and change all the time and remain brilliant. Other bands are Converge and make the same kind of record each time and remain brilliant. TL:  Many of  our readers are beginner musicians, what advice do you have for someone who is just getting started learning an instrument, or who feels discouraged? AW: Push through the awkward beginnings when your fingers hurt and you don’t want to practice. Because eventually you’ll be good enough to play your favourite songs. And that’s one of the best things ever. TL: We’d love to share your video for Great Northern what would you like our readers to know about the video, can you give us a little background? AW: It’s made by a friend of ours, Bradley Coomber, who works in the film industry. We told him we wanted a video clip about a kid who travels to space. Because upward motion is heaps inspirational and space rules hard. The results speak for themselves. How To Succeed On The HSPT The High School Placement Test (HSPT) is a standardized admissions exam used by many Catholic high schools across the United States. Eighth graders take the comprehensive entrance test for placement in the ninth grade. Even if students have received their elementary and middle school education at a Catholic institution, they are still required to take the exam if they wish to continue their learning at a Catholic high school. The Scholastic Testing Service, a company that provides assessment materials, designs and administers the annual exam. Because courses, teaching methods and styles, and evaluation standards differ from one school to another, a standardized exam such as the HSPT creates a uniform process to effectively evaluate applicants. HSPT results assist admissions committees in determining if a potential student can thrive under an often-demanding workload, and possesses the necessary academic background and core subject skills (such as in critical reading or math) to succeed. Combined with transcripts and teacher recommendations, HSPT scores present a detailed profile of a students strengths and weaknesses, and their readiness for a rigorous high school environment. Catholic schools have been using the HSPT as part of the admissions process for more than 50 years. The HSPT evaluates language, reading, and mathematics proficiency through multiple choice questions. Five categories are administered over two and a half hours. Students receive 16 minutes to answer the 60 questions in the Verbal Skills portion. The Quantitative Skills category is made up of 52 questions and lasts half an hour. The Reading section includes 62 questions and lasts 25 minutes. There are 64 questions in the 45-minute Math section. The Language portion is comprised of 60 questions over 25 minutes. Incorrect responses are not penalized, so it is best to take a guess than leave a question unanswered. The HSPT is administered annually in the late fall, usually in November or December. In order to take the test, students must register with the high school to which they are applying. Results can be sent to multiple schools. HSPT scores will fall between 200 and 800. High school admissions committees each have their own criteria for test results to be considered adequate. Educators and admissions personnel want to insure incoming students are prepared for an academically-intensive environment, and HSPT scores are one of the main ways they evaluate candidates. Thus, while HSPT results arent the only component of an application package, they are a major influence on a students acceptance status. If your child hasnt taken a standardized test before, it may be best to take several practice exams to perfect his or her test-taking skills, and review the topics in a timed setting. Almost all material on the HSPT should be somewhat familiar, since questions are derived from standard middle and elementary classroom exercises. Consider using an expert tutor who will teach your child testing strategies and problem-solving tips so theyll succeed on test day. The admissions game at private high schools can be tough. The desirability of a Catholic education, the rigorous, college-preparatory environment, and the competitive admissions process almost always insures that there are more applicants than open spots. Getting a top score on the HSPT increases your childs chances of receiving a welcome letter in the mail.
